What if this was the last conversation?

What if this were the last conversation you would ever have with me?

What would you do differently?

For the last couple of days the front pages of the UK Papers have been filled with pictures of Prince Harry and Duke William with their mum Princess Diana.

The articles anticipate an ITV documentary, out today, which will celebrate the 20th anniversary of her death.

The headlines read:

“A Lifetime of Regret.”

“Regret over their ‘rush’ to end last phone call with Prince Diana”

“Final phone call with their mother Princess Diana still haunts them.”

The regret that haunts Will and Harry to this day is about how distracted they were in that phone call. They had been desperate to get off the phone and get back to playing.

When someone close to us dies, it is very common to feel regret for the things we didn’t say or do. We tend to live life like a dress rehearsal, as though we have an infinite number of tomorrows.

How might our lives be different if we lived each day aware of death and how fragile and precious our existence is?

What would you say or do differently in the interactions you have with people today?

Would you be more present? Would you look into that person’s eyes and say I love you?

Prince Harry says in the documentary:

“And if I’d known that that was the last time I was going to speak to my mother the things I would have said to her.”

He adds:

“Looking back on it now, it’s incredibly hard. I have to sort of deal with that for the rest of my life.”

The mission behind Apart of Me is to help families talk about death. We believe that talking about death in an open way help us appreciate what we have, and to make better choices about how we spend our time, especially how present we are with those we love.

What could you say or do this week to ensure you spend your time wisely, and don’t end up being haunted by regrets? Share your answer or email us.
